Motorcycle VIN Check

Chassis number check & VIN report

"Chassis number" and "VIN" are often used interchangeably, but the distinction matters — especially for imported vehicles.

Chassis number vs VIN

On modern vehicles the VIN is the chassis number: one 17-character code identifying the whole vehicle. On older and many Japanese-market vehicles, the manufacturer uses a shorter chassis code (frame number) instead of a 17-char VIN. When such a vehicle is imported, that chassis number is what appears on the import and registration paperwork.

Checking it

For a free technical decode of any VIN (make, model, year, plant, specs), use the official NHTSA VIN decoder.

A mismatch between the stamped chassis number and the paperwork is the classic sign of a cloned or ringed vehicle — verify before paying.
